In between: the cocoon and design

With a non-dualistic and holistic understanding of nature-culture interaction, this project aims to create a dialogue between humans and non-human living agents in the design process, rebuild the relationship between the silkworm and mulberry tree by reversing the process of domestication and design in-between spaces for multiple interactions and interventions.

Each time a new living agent, a new non-living agent, or a new catastrophe is added to nature, it reconstructs itself as a whole. What if designers follow the steps of nature to design holistically?

We, as human beings, are part of a complex system. A complex system where there is a process so that constant change and flux are inevitable. However, in the design field, designers’ approach is still linear and rigid. Project In between the cocoon and design is looking for opportunities to create hybrid design approaches and new ways of analysis in design by inspiration from the reverse engineering process.

Within these concerns, Project in between: the cocoon and design analyzed the sericulture or silk farming is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. The silk-making process is harmful since most producers boil the pupa to produce the silk. During the process, the silkworms are fed with mulberry tree leaves, but unfortunately, silkworms do not live on the mulberry tree nor have a connection with the mulberry tree for thousands of years.

With a non-dualistic and holistic understanding of nature-culture interaction, Project in between: the cocoon and design aims to create a dialogue between humans and non-human living agents in designing and rebuilding the relationship between the silkworm and mulberry tree by reversing the process of domestication.
